How to Stand Out From The Crowd
It’s simple really – be yourself 😎

Standing out from the crowd takes many forms. But, the most important aspect when seeking success in this regard is to be yourself.
Uniformity, was once upon a time, important. That’s no longer the case in today’s world.
When I started work a long time ago, I stood out because I wouldn’t follow the norm. I was too honest, apparently 🤣
Then one day, my opinion mattered. I had found those who needed and appreciated my skills and knowledge along with my out of the box thinking.
So, I stood out for the right reasons, but I was seen as a threat by some (my peers).
Then, it didn’t matter anymore. I realised what was holding me back – I didn’t have to be perfect.
I was off and running, making a difference.
Much of my success regarding making a difference has come from valuing those who have worked for me, by letting them be who they are, by letting them stand out. This has meant asking myself the following about them:
- Are they capable? In short, reliable, a self starter, open minded, understand their strengths and weaknesses.
- Do they have capacity? Can they manage their time? A willingness to learn?
- Are their skills and knowledge relevant? It’s not always about being an expert in their field of endeavour, but being resourceful with what they have.
- Do they have social capital? In otherwords, a willingness to engage with others, as this is the basis of trust.
- Can they make informed decisions? This is about using data versus emotion.
If you have one or more of the above attributes, success is going to come your way. It doesn’t matter whether you are in the back room, the front office, in the c-suite or out on the road. You will be recognised for who you are and valued accordingly.

This reminds me of a Mad Magazine cartoon strip I once read.
A young college woman was informing her mature bearded prof that she was not going to follow the crowd anymore.
“From now on I am going to do my own thing, follow my own star, be completely myself, who I really am no matter what anyone else thinks.”
The prof replied, “My, that’s quite a manifesto of change. What brought this on?”
She responded, “Well, that’s what everyone else is doing.” 😂
The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Lol, CA – a bit of truth there 😂 During the 1970s, I was always hanging out for my dad to bring home the latest Mad Magazine 😊

So true. Be yourself. I spent a lot of time chasing other people’s goals and getting approval from others in the past. Yes, it is hard to stick with oneself when one doesn’t have enough confidence. LOL. I am always very unsure of everything.

I can appreciate exactly what you’re saying being unsure about things. It’s never easy making decisions, but when you do, it’s always amazing how calmness descends 😊

Very true. Especially for small companies. It helps to tap into individual skills sets, interests, and personalities.

I get a great deal of satisfaction every time I successfully match someone with a key role or function.

Yes. When you hire strong talent and you match them with their skills and goals, it’s a win win.
